Computers are assuming a growing role in general practice, both in terms of the consultation, and in terms of practice administration. Increasingly it is as important for GPs to be competent in the use of their computer system as it is to be competent clinically.
This site is intended to provide a quick and concise guide to the use of EMIS - the most widely used general practice computer system in the UK. It concentrates on the most important functions of the system first, and will allow users to start operating the system quickly and safely.
The topics are also available as .pdf files - for these you will need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader. Bear in mind that some of the files are quite large, and unless you are on a broadband connection it may take some time for them to download. If nothing appears to be happening after you click the link be patient, make a cup of coffee, and they should appear shortly.....

Guide to the New GP Contract
The new GP contract is central to the activities of all UK practices. Therefore it is essential for all GPs to know how it works, and to have a clear understanding of the role of the global sum, the QOF (Quality Outcomes Framework) and quality points, and enhanced services. This is a Powerpoint guide to the new contract, which is designed to be a clear and concise introduction to the subject – it should be particularly useful for GP registrars, perhaps to work through with their trainers. Since this edition was produced (2006) there have been further changes to some details of the contract, and it is overdue an update (March 09). However the basics are unchanged, and if you clearly understand these, then the recent changes will be easily incorporated.

Consultation mode (CM) is the screen that you should always work from when there is a need to record contact with a patient i.e when you are consulting in surgery, but also if you need to record a telephone call, or a home visit to a patient.
